History of St. Antony’s Church, Paduva

St. Antony’s Church

The region that is now known as Paduva was once part of the wider mission area of Meenachil in Kottayam District. In the early 1900s, Catholic families here travelled long distances to parishes such as Kidangoor, Mutholi, Kadanad, Pala, and Meenachil to take part in Holy Mass and receive the Sacraments.

To meet the growing spiritual needs of these families, a small Christian community was gradually formed in this locality. With the guidance of the Church authorities and the wholehearted cooperation of the faithful, regular worship began, and the settlement came to be recognized as Paduva.

A decisive moment in this journey occurred on 19 January 1920, when the community received official permission to establish organized worship. From then on, Holy Mass, catechism, and parish associations flourished locally, allowing the faithful to live their faith without the hardship of travelling to distant parishes. Over the years, Paduva evolved into a vibrant parish dedicated to St. Antony of Padua, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church.
